Good News.

Travelers who are currently returning to vacation destinations across the globe now have even more good news to celebrate. There is now a new way to treat a common condition called ‘traveler’s diarrhea.’ The issue affects up to 40 percent of travelers globally each year, causing discomfort and derailing travel plans.

Those who travel frequently will be relieved to hear that a new antibacterial drug has been approved by the FDA to treat the condition, which affects the digestive tract. This new treatment option, called Aemcolo (rifamycin), alleviates symptoms such as abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting by targeting the E. Coli bacteria responsible. Now, travelers can spend less time worrying about the chance of facing discomfort while traveling abroad, and more time enjoying their destinations.

This welcome news is a great reminder for travelers to always prepare for the unexpected while on vacation. Here are some great tips to ensure that your next trip goes as smoothly as possible!

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

In order to get the most out of your next getaway, be sure to plan ahead. If you have not traveled abroad before, we recommend speaking with your doctor to establish a treatment plan in case you feel sick while traveling. If you have a sensitive stomach or suffer from food sensitivities, take precautions by bringing any appropriate medications on your trip. You may also want to research local healthcare options before traveling to your destination.

If you are staying at a hotel or resort destination, the concierge can likely provide you with valuable information about any emergency medical care services that are available. Taking precautions and being proactive is key to enjoying your vacation and getting back to doing what you love most!

Tip #2: Have Your Paperwork Handy

If you have any medical conditions that might require you to receive care while traveling, such as a food allergy or other chronic condition, you may want to bring medical documentation with you on your trip. Having the right paperwork to clearly outline your medical condition(s) and proper treatment can save valuable time during an emergency.

If you are traveling abroad and do not speak the local language, it can be a good idea to have your condition translated in print before you travel. We also recommend carrying your medical provider’s emergency contact information while traveling. The more prepared you are, the more at ease you will feel during your trip! If you do end up receiving medical care for travelers’ diarrhea, be sure to ask for the Aemcolo treatment.

Tip #3: Pack Appropriately

While you are probably already checking the weather forecast for your destination, you may also want to consider other environmental conditions – and pack appropriately. You may need to bring insect repellent or sunscreen to your destination, or even receive immunizations for certain illnesses. Most hotels and resorts will be able to provide recommendations for anything you might need during your stay. It is best to check in with a concierge at your destination before you arrive in order to be the most prepared!
